The Australian Commonwealth Government has been proactive with policies to ensure Australia meets her international commitments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One such policy is the introduction of the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target.
The Mandatory Renewable Energy Target is the quantity of additional electricity that must be generated in Australia by 2010 from renewable energy resources. This equates to 9500 GWh of electricity, which represents an increase of 2% over the 1997 level of electricity generated from renewable energy resources.
A method of measuring the amount of renewable energy produced or non-renewable energy displaced is the creation of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is the equivalent of 1 MWh of electricity either produced from renewable energy resources or displaced from non-renewable energy resources. The installation of a solar water heater may be considered to displace electricity produced from non-renewable energy resources and therefore be eligible for the creation of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
The value of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is not fixed and varies from time to time. As at 2nd June 2010 Edwards Hot Water is offering to purchase your Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for:
